The board and its schematic. Replaced RAM chips. First circuit. First working signal. Resulting picture. Signal from C I did not buy a disk drive for the computer, but it does not matter. There are now better solutions where the drive is replaced by an SD card!

Many games are available in cracked versions where the fastloader can be disabled, or with the fastloader removed. I'm told many demos are not available in no-fastloader versions so the SD2IEC would not be a good choice for demos. Combined with CBM FileBrowser for navigating directories and disk images, it is really easy to use, and also not too slow. Some typing is required though: LOAD"! Manually-typed filenames are best when they are short.

I used a veroboard and there were not that many components to add. Power cable pinout.

Power on and the red LED will flash for two seconds while it looks for a valid firmware. The green LED should then flash while it accesses the card. When it starts to flash the firmware the green LED will flash rapidly. To test if the computer is successfully connecting to the SD2IEC device you can use the following simple program:.

Firs of all, I apologize for using English - yes, I've noticed it's a German forum nevertheless I sincerely hope most of German people have no problems with English but I wasn't able to find any forum rules restricting usage of English Basically what is the best floppy emulation device for C64 using the 32'atmega? Build the best device using the Atmega in DIP - the same applies - please guide me to the most actual build info for the device using this chip.

That would be the sd2iec v1. However, currently there does not exist a layout for DIL - the sd2iec v1. In the p Version you can use a Bootloader, so you dont have to reflash the Chip everytime with a new firmware using an ISP. The software is now called "sd2iec" and is maintained by Unseen. The latest firmware is always here: Link. The last firmware version usable in an ATMega32 is the v0. The version is so large, that you can not use a bootloader with it.

The last firmware version for the ATMega is the v0. I know two different layouts of the pin's used for different functions: - A: the original Lars Pontoppidan layout - B: the shadowolf layout.

Latest version is 0. To make it more complicated you can use a bootloader or flash the firmware directly. Due to limitted space in the ATmega32, this firmware is available only to version 0. Here the highest version is 0. The device itself can be build on through hole test pcb's. I myself have just made in eagle layout of the Lars P. So the decisions you have to make is: Which layout to use lp or sw? Then based on that, choose the appropiate layout.

Then manual build on testboard or have pcb made somewhere. Then which firmware - if that option is available. My decisions was: LarsP layout. Gives option for both firmwares ATmega32 with sd2iec 0. For this reason, I try to use mine as little as possible and keep it as more of a showpiece in my museum. There are other drive emulators out there.

I put emulator in quotes, because the SD2IEC is not a true emulator, rather it emulates some functions of the based on commands passed to it. This can be a problem, since anything that attempts to change code in the will fail to work.

This means many copy protection schemes, fastloaders, and other such utilities are simple not going to function on the SD2IEC devices. The Pi on the other hand is a true Commodore emulator! It uses a copy of the original ROM images from the Commodore and a full emulator to present itself to the computer as a true drive in every way. It just works. In addition to being a full emulator, it has a hardware LED, and piezo buzzer to provide the sights and sounds of the drive working, along with an OLED screen for browsing SD card images.

Did I mention you can 3D print some awesome retro cases to put it in? If you plan to 3D print your case, you can get the files on Thingiverse. The first thing I did before building my Pi is to simply prototype it on a breadboard to make sure everything actually works. This is a simple way to find mistakes and test ideas before putting the Pi on a soldered board which is much more difficult to change after the fact. The RPi 4 is not yet supported and there is no timeline for supporting it if ever.

The Pi comes with a wiring schematic that is decent enough to follow. However, I know so many people prefer simpler Fritzing style diagrams for these types of projects. This is the official Pi wiring schematic for this project.

Note that the official schematic does not show connection of the OLED display. You will need to make a change in the options file to enable this, covered later in this tutorial. I used the circuit boards listed above and scored them with a razor knife, snapped them, and then finished off the rough edges with a little sandpaper. On the back of the OLED circuit board, I simply jumped all of the grounds together to make it simpler to wire.

It might not be the most elegant solution, but It works just fine. The final wire is tied to a common ground. You can find links in the parts list above. The Commodore 64 and most other Commodore machines use 5 volt serial lines. This was very common in the s.Any obvious best choices? I plan on getting an Ultimate II eventually, but the wait is long and I need something sooner.

And of course compatibility is important. Disc files is a must of course and cartridge files would be nice to have. A professional product is also a must. So no bare circuit boards, soldering or screwdrivers.

It should also cost less than the Ultimate since I'm going to buy one soon. Isn't their cost pretty close to the Ultimate2? Vesalia does not show them available. Cheap and reliable! EasyFlash 3 is another option to transfer files. As said before there's currently only two choices for emulation: Ultimate II and Turbo Chameleon The TC64 is a full C64 emulator so they're not the same kind of device.

Maybe we'll see the u soon. The price listed is probably the one of the previous model, C64SD Infinity. And that led me to put together this resource to help others who are first experimenting running SD Cards on the Commodore series of computers. This is not the parallel version used on the Commodore PETs, but rather a stripped down serial version that was designed specifically for the consumer lines. The IEC serial bus is used for many different types of peripherals, the most common two being printers and disk drives.

The tape drive was also on this serial bus, albeit on a different physical connector. This allows Commodore computers to read and write to SD cards rather than than 5.

Additionally an SD card is far more reliable and less prone to damage as compared to floppies. At least a nice PDF you can download right? One word of caution as I found out quickly, you need to use a smaller card. I tried several 32, 64, and GB cards that were laying in my drawer and none of them were compatible.

I wound up purchasing a Transcend five pack of these 2GB cards from Amazon on they worked perfect first try. Another recommendation is not to use an SD card which has been previously used for some other operating system such as a Raspberry Pi. Again, I just recommend buying a new card. Once the card is formatted its now ready to be prepared for use. Although these programs are not strictly needed, they do make the task much simpler. On some versions of Windows it has been reported that the Explorer will add an extension to the file.

If this happens you will need to rename the file and remove everything including the period.

EXE or FB It is recommended that you create directories and drop the files into them. This is especially true if you have a multi-disk game. Games like the Ultima series of role-playing games come on several disks and will be much easier to play if they are in their own directory. LST file, but more on that later. Strictly speaking though, directories are optional and you can place all D64 images right in the root of the SD card along with the FB64 program.
